Gifts to the Future
“Your retirement plan may be fueling the climate crisis. But it doesn’t have to.” – As You Sow
If you’re lucky enough to have a 401(k), IRA, 529 or other investments, you probably invest in fossil fuels. Don’t like what that means in terms of risk (not to mention, for the future)? Check out these AsYouSow.org research tools:
Fossil Free Funds
FossilFreeFunds.org shows where your money is directly exposed. You can also use it to find the “least bad” fund options available in your holdings. They also grade how much popular index funds expose you to fossil fuel stocks.
Invest Your Values
Invest Your Values tracks this info across entire corporate retirement plans. It’s shocking to see how badly exposed employees’ retirement savings are at the 38 brands they follow. They’re graded brands from Adobe, Airbnb, Amazon, Apple, and Bloomberg to Tesla, TJX, Vertex, Visa and Whole Foods.
It’s especially weird how many of the brands that act climate friendly don’t protect employees’ retirements.
Talk to your employer about changing this.
