Gifts to the Future

As climate issues worsen, and as more solutions are deployed and scaled up, the climate economy will become mainstream. Across the climate economy, all business models and industries will shift to varying extents.

You can choose to factor both climate risk – direct financial losses resulting from the climate crisis – and climate opportunity – upside growth opportunities from solving climate problems – into your investment planning now.

College Savings

Given that 529 college savings are intended to benefit the most climate focused generations ever born, it’s absurd no 529 plans offer both fossil divestment and climate investment.

Some 529 programs (CA, DC, and VA for example) offer ESG (environmental, social, and governance) or SRI (socially responsible investing) fund options, but choices are limited. Hopefully, all of this will change soon.

Retirement and other Investing

We talked about using Fossil Free Funds and other tools to get some climate risk out of your retirement savings. You can also move them somewhere like carboncollective.co, which both eliminates fossil equities and invests in climate solutions.

Fossil Free Index Funds

You might also want to look at the Sphere 500 Climate Fund (SPFFX), “climate-friendly fund for 401(k)s.” This is simply an index fund of the S&P 500, minus As You Sow’s fossil fuel companies list.

Talk to your investment advisor about whether and how to adjust your investment strategies around climate risk and climate opportunity.
