Gifts to the Future

The hard truth is that food waste means you personally make your own steady supply of methane.

The food we waste decomposes into a steady stream of methane. Methane is – intensely – much worse for climate than CO2, Wasting less food reduces how much methane you release AND saves you money.

While food waste happens at every production and distribution stage, the food we waste at home is 39% of all food waste – roughly 42 billion pounds every year. It’s on all of us to fix this.

Food Waste

  • Buy groceries and prepare meals with respect for the food
  • Also buy with respect for your wallet – food is expensive
  • Be creative and organized with leftovers
  • Manage your freezer, refrigerator, and other food storage carefully
  • What you can’t help but waste, compost (it’s a must for every home, not just a nice to have)
  • Learn how Too Good to Go, Copia, and Goodr are fighting food waste at scale

Composting

While many can (and do) compost at home for free, that might not work for you. This doesn’t mean composting can’t work.
